One month in Hilo, Hawai’i
“It may be that when we no longer know what to do
we have come to our real work,
and that when we no longer know which way to go
we have come to our real journey.”
- Wendell Berry
It has been a month since I moved to Hilo Hawai’i, my birthplace. Living here has been my biggest dream and now that I am here, I am unsure of what direction I want to move towards. I’ve pinched myself “omg I live here” about a thousand times as my excitement has my nervous system in a bit of shock.
This quote by Wendell Berry perfectly summarizes how I am feeling and doing a month into living my dream. Nothing has been easy, from food and gas prices going up quite a bit since I planned my move about a year ago, difficulty finding places to live, the stock market and my savings continuing to tank, and moving into an apartment that was an absolute mess. But, as much as I’ve felt confused and frustrated, I’ve never once thought this was a bad idea to come here.
Locals say that when you move to Hawai’i, it either eats you up and spits you out, or you learn how to survive and make it and I always remember that. I am a daughter of this land, and I know I will make it. One of my first lessons is to release preconceived notions of knowing precisely what I was doing, and learn to go with the flow. And I know I am going to have a better experience and journey because of that. I am so excited for my future here!
